The power of flamenco unleashed itself in Austin at the Rosette for one unforgettable night through the masterful artistry of guitarist Carlos Piñana and percussionist Miguel Ángel Orengo Vicente. This wasn’t just a concert—it was a sensory immersion, a thunderclap of rhythm and passion that shook the walls, and my inner ears.

Carlos Piñana doesn’t play flamenco. He embodies it. As the grandson of a legendary cantaor and son of a renowned guitarist, Piñana’s lineage pulses through every string he touches. But this isn’t heritage on autopilot. It’s refined mastery. It’s soul-deep communication. As a professor at the Murcia Superior Music Conservatory, Piñana brings his flamenco fluency to classical spaces, helping musicians unlock the fire and complexity of this form.

A cherished friend of Austin Classical Guitar, Carlos made headlines last summer hosting the ACG Youth Orchestra as the closing act of a major flamenco festival in Murcia, Spain. And now, sharing the stage with the magnetic Miguel Ángel Orengo Vicente, he brought that same festival heat to our city.

The depths of vibrations from the guitar and percussion reverberated throughout the hall, like a full orchestration using just two instruments. The echoes and undulations—African sub-beats, 5/7 drumming—romantically and frenetically danced through the space, ‌like the language. Fast, faster, and fastest. My head was spinning.

The second number sounded like a heavy fog lifting after a drizzle, dispersing any residual clouds. A soulful jam, a rebuttal of forgiveness by a once jilted lover, forgotten then remembered in plain sight. When seen, the pulsating, throbbing joy of reunion bubbles over and sounds like, “OH NO It’s YOU?”

Listening to these two superstars leaves everyone else in the dust. From here on, when I hear the name Carlos Piñana, I will forever be etched with a flamenco heart.
